Assignment 4: Prototyping a User Interface
Familiarize yourself with the basic concepts on how to build prototypes by reading the relevant chapters in the textbook.
Detailed Instructions
In this assignment we will continue our exploration of the interface for a self-service checkout kiosk. The overall goal of this assignment is to create several different kinds of prototypes. The interactive menu system should be touch based. The actual technology implementation is up to you: iPad, tablet, built into table, etc. Here's an article that talks about how to use iPads as customer interacting devices. The article specifically mentions how Stacked Restaurant is using the iPad in lieu to printed menus.
- Create at least TWO different story boards and associated paper mockups for the main screens needed by a guest to order food through your interactive menu and ordering system for TWO different design alternatives. Each storyboard should address the main success scenario and major alternate scenarios.
- Convert one of the storyboards and associated paper mockups to a digital wireframe using a prototyping tool of your choice. The prototype should be a low fidelity prototype and should look like a “napkin drawing” similar to what the Balsamiq Mockup tool produces.
- Create a video demonstration of the interaction designed using video recording or taping a Wizard of Oz session. Upload the video to a video hosting service such as blip.tv, screenr.com, viddler, or YouTube. Submit the clickable URL as part of your submission.
- Evaluate each design alternative based on efficiency, effectiveness, usability, utility, user experience, learnability, and memorability. Add your evaluation results to your report.
